Nanny & Governess Thoughts

14 Jul

For a few years I’ve wanted to write an article about how to keep a Nanny/Governess. It is my belief that families want to do this but are not sure how to. After a recent search online I ran across this great article: 5 Ways to Keep your Nanny  I think this article is a great start to thinking about boundaries, respect, and communication.

I’ve worked for many families across the United States over the past ten years and there have been a variety of reasons for me to part ways. Below is a list of things that have contributed to this.

  • Agreed upon job term
  • Job changes from initially agreed upon terms
  • Jealousy of the relationship you have with the children
  • Lack of communication (regular meetings are important!)
  • Families not knowing what they want
  • Confusing the Nanny/Governess role with other household roles
  • Difference in philosophy of raising children
  • Lack of opportunity to use the skills I was hired to do
  • Lack of respect
  • Schedule changing without ample notice
  • Unrealistic expectations

These are my thoughts for now and believe its helpful to get this out to the universe. May expand and write more on this if there is interest. Send me a message or comment below if you’d like to see more 🙂

Random Acts of Kindness

10 Dec

Today specifically I am calling out to all followers of my blog, those who stumbled across it, or any avenue that brought you here to participate in Random Acts of Kindness.

A little history for you first. I have always thoroughly enjoyed the movie Pay it Forward and am a firm believer that ‘there is enough negativity in this world without me adding to it.’ In the recent past I ran across this video and blog post that struck my fancy.  Unfortunately when searching, discovered it is lost in the abyss of unwritten emails, pinterest, word document….somewhere 🙂 [once I locate it the site will be shared here. It is a has great ideas on what one can do and the power of paying it forward.] The basic idea of the post was to have everyone pay it forward the day of your birthday. What a neat way to celebrate ones birthday! Decided when my day came around this is exactly what I would do.

As a younger girl I enjoyed my birthday very much, making it a big ta-do with a party, guests, presents…you catch my drift. Each birthday brought less and less of a desire to celebrate me. Focusing the day on me for some reason just makes me uncomfortable.

With each passing year I found being together with people was what brought joy, lasting memories, and happiness. Sure, I enjoy a reminder of ‘happy birthday’ or a card but truly have no desire to have a party focused on me.

That is why I absolutely LOVE this idea! Bring people together and focus on what good we can do for others today.

I have a list of ideas on what I can do as Random acts of kindness today to celebrate the day I was brought into this world. Figured I was brought into this world for a purpose, not just to fill space and use resources. Will you join me in performing a RAK or several and let me know in the comments below that you were part of this special day? Even sharing the fun specific RAK you do would bring a smile to my face and warm my heart.

For lack of better skills with my computer, I will have to update this post later when the pictures from today are uploaded. Appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to read my blog.

Have a blessed evening!

Dear Deer

28 Oct

Since my week was good but not very eventful when it comes to the blogging realm, I am pulling out some pictures I took one morning. This deer probably stood there for about 10 minutes getting every precious seed she could.

Clever little one for sure! It was fun to watch. At one point she stopped and looked at me as if to say “what are you looking at?!”

Seemed to not bother her in the least I was watching her.  Fox, birds, deer, are always traipsing through the back yard. Watching them is something I will never tire of.

What have you stopped to notice lately?

Enjoy the remainder of the weekend!

Must Like Peanut Butter

25 Oct

Healthy cookies you say? I’m skeptical. Especially when the main ingredient is chickpeas/garbanzo beans. There is no way these would taste normal, right?! Grain free, no sugar well, technically honey is sugar, hmm, how might this taste? I was curious what the texture would be like.

This is the recipe I recently discovered. Decided to give it a go this week.. Here is a shot of the dough.

The texture was good and surprisingly didn’t taste like beans

The finished product was good. Didn’t quite taste like the cookies I am use to but for being GF, I was happy with the result. I will try these again and tweak them to see what differences I can make. Wondering if the mini chocolate chips made a difference? Will try regular sized ones next time.

Also went shopping this week and purchased some much-needed clothing. Found some great items and was more than grateful to take a bag to donation of my old items.

It is certainly fall, as I am reminded each time I set foot outdoors.

Enjoy this season of beautiful color!

Heute bin ich dankbar für Schnee!

25 Oct

Schnee. What a wonderful word in the German language! Much better than the English ‘snow’, in my opinion.

Today I awoke to a wonderland of white outside my window. Decided sharing it with the world would be a beautiful thing!

Last night I was giddy with excitement as the first few flakes were descending. You see, I come from a small town in Oregons Willamette Valley, very rarely does it snow there. When it does, the valley is in chaos. People here are use to the snow so I doubt there was as much excitement and wonder for them as I experienced last night!

It is enjoyable having a leisurely morning, warm caramel coffee tantalizing my taste buds, and my eyes beholding the  winter wonderland outside. I am thankful for all I am blessed with.

What is something you are thankful for today?

As always, enjoy hearing from you in the comments below

Take a moment to stop and smell the roses, or in this case the snow 🙂

What a wonderful world this would be….

18 Oct

I am Thankful that I have opportunity to make choices in life.

There are two key words here, opportunity and the action word make. (Be forewarned, the student part of me is coming out in the next little bit 🙂

Let’s start with opportunity. My online google search came up with this definition:

  • A set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.

I rather enjoy this definition. Look, even the word, make came up again. I enjoy it when that happens. 🙂 When I look at all the ‘set of circumstances’ I have, I quickly can come up with this list:

  • Living in America
  • Ample health
  • Having a job
  • Good salary
  • Access to good health care
  • A car to drive
  • Clean and running water
  • Food & healthy food
  • Internet
  • Books
  • Literacy
  • Freedom of religion
  • Freedom to vote
  • Supportive family and friends
  • Ability to exercise

According the definition this ‘set of circumstances’ makes it ‘possible.’ What is possible with my set of circumstances?  I must make a choice in order for these circumstances to mean something. In other words, a conscious action must be taken for desired results to come about.  Although, true enough, one can choose not to take action and there still will be a result. Not making a choice is making a choice. Making a conscious action towards something will lead to a desired goal.

When I look at my list I am grateful for all I have. With my opportunities comes great responsibility.  Which leads to the question, what action am I making with my opportunities? Which am I letting sit there, not realizing they are opportunities?

I am a firm believer on focusing on the positive and what I do have. Never has focusing on the negative been a benefit to me. This is why recently I have been putting a daily gratitude/thankful thought each day on my Facebook page. This video in part inspired this idea. A short article about it here.

Living in the United States I have the opportunity to make choices about many things. The question is what choices will I make? And, what will I do with these choices. Because a decision in my book always follows with an action.

Which leads me to you, the reader:

What opportunities do you have?

What choices are you making with your opportunities?

What opportunities do you have that you may not have realized?

Can you imagine if everyone realized their opportunities and took action on them? What a wonderful world this would be! 🙂

Realize, be grateful, take action,

Inspiration

14 Oct

Hello, Have we met? Oh, yes, I remember now, it has just been a while (I thought you looked familiar)!

I recently came off of 5 weeks of vacation and am getting back into the swing of things again. Can I just say, it is sooo nice to be working again? Yes, I just think I did!  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my time off, explored Colorado and was able to catch up with a few people in person as well.

What can I say, I am a work-a-holic?! No, I do not think that is quite it. You see, I enjoy my job, immensely (it is my favorite one yet to date). I find purpose and meaning in my days, as I never have before. And, the fact that I am living in a sunshine state makes it that much better (no, I am not in Florida!).

I am writing to you because I have been inspired. Having a blog is fun but much work. It is often I get caught up in the little things. There is so much to learn about the whole blogging realm, it can be a bit overwhelming at times. This is why I have decided that my perfectionism must go! I must just write and post (I can go back and ‘fix’ it later, right?!).

Through some different avenues I have been inspired to create a schedule of blogging for myself. This will keep me on track and get you some information. As I have two blogs I decided on doing a bi-weekly update on this one. If I have time and desire to I will add more days of posting to this blog.

Thursdays and Saturdays will be my posting days. Thursdays will be Thankful Thursday. I will share something I am thankful for and tell you why. Saturdays will be my update days. I will let you know what I did that week, outside of work; post recalls, fun facts, write my comments with a link to an article I read recently, or any plethora of these. If you have something specific you would like to hear about by all means put a comment in the comment box below.

Look forward to catching up with you,

Nanny G

Have something that has inspired you recently?

I would like to hear about it in the comments blow 🙂

Mementos

5 Aug

Hello there,

Nice to catch up with you!

I have been in Colorado for over four months,  hard to believe that time has gone by so quickly! Yesterday, I had a wonderful visit with dear friends from Oregon.  It was very nice to catch up and see some familiar faces from my old home town in my new home state! My day ended in the Coors baseball field with this setting:

So much has happened in this short time both for me and the people who live in my area. On a big scale there has been the Waldo Canyon fire (and now flooding and landslides) and the shooting in Aurora. While these events have certainly been around me, they did not directly physically impact the area I am currently living or working. It has been great to see how people have responded to these events, caring and supportive Coloradans, of which I am happily one of now. Despite these challenges facing the area I look back on these past months and can say that I am blessed much more than I can measure.

A few weeks ago I was looking around my room. It dawned on me that I have many mementos. Although I may not hear from some of these people as often as I would prefer, they each are reminders to me of how rich I am. Rich in people who care about me.  Decided I would take pictures of these mementos and share them with my blog readers. Do you see your memento? Enjoy….

What kind of mementos do you have?

What is your favorite piece of memorabilia?

What post would you like to see next on this blog?

Be blessed and enjoy your memories 🙂

sunshine!

Laundry Detergent

8 Jul

Have wanted to try this for a while and decided one Saturday that this was the day. Also tried out many DIY projects so check them out!

finished product, nearly 2 gallons!

I used the recipe found at this link here

Here is the recipe (directly from the website):

  • Some kind of bucket to mix all your ingredients in. I used a 2 gallon paint bucket.
  • 1/3 bar of Fels Naptha Laundry Soap (you can also use Zote, Octagon, or Ivory–amounts may vary)
  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (everything but the bucket can be found in the laundry aisle of Walmart, Fred Meyer, or WinCo–at least in my neck of the woods)

I went with the Fels Naptha soap because that is what I could find.

Has anyone used the Zote, Octagon, or another soap?

If you used another soap, where did you find it?

I didn’t end up adding the essential oils, but I may at a future date.

Here is my picture tutorial. Have yet to use it, review to follow.

Do-it-yourself Glass Cleaner

8 Jul

Why make glass cleaner, doesn’t Windex work well? For me, yes it has. From what I am reading people are suggesting that this is a cheaper and green way to go.

Figure I was doing all these DIY projects, so why not one more? From the comments it was pretty convincing that people had some great success with this one 🙂 Plus, according to the website the cost forty-eight cents per bottle, pretty good in my book!    The original post I discovered for this one is here

{Really like her website (Crunchy Betty) bty,  you may decide to browse around once you get there! I have tried her ‘ no-poo’ method and may do a post on that if readers are interested (hint: leave a comment below)}

The recipe follows:

I made it and am trying it out. Noticed there was a suggestion to use black and white print  newspaper. I have used this before and was impressed with the results. I had an 8oz bottle so there was some extra. I am re-using a juice container to store the extra for now.

P.S. Make sure to shake the bottle well each time as the corn starch settles on the bottom.

Have you tried any DIY glass cleaners?

Enjoy your reflection and savings, Nanny G
